Editor’s note: I did some research on how to optimise Claude to produce a really good financial plan with giving it the right instructions

I will get straight to the point today.

Most business owners are flying blind.

No real financial plan. No projections. No clarity on what's bleeding money and what's actually working.

They "run the numbers" in their head, maybe glance at a bank balance, and call it strategy.

That's not strategy. That's guesswork with a business card.

Today I'm giving you something that fixes that.

I built a prompt that turns Claude into your personal CFO. Not a generic chatbot response. A structured, institutional-quality financial plan for your business — the kind of thinking that goes into Goldman Sachs client decks.

You just need to set it up right. Here's exactly how.

Step 1: Use the right model

Go to claude. In the top left of the chat window, select the model. Choose Claude Sonnet 4.6 or Claude Opus 4.6.

Do not use the default. The default gives you average. You want the full engine.

Step 2: Start a new Project

Click "Projects" in the left sidebar, then "New Project."

Name it something like "Business CFO" or "Financial Planning."

Projects give Claude persistent context. It remembers your business across conversations. This is what separates a one-off answer from a real working tool.

Step 3: Add a custom instruction (this is the setup most people skip)

Inside your project, click "Project instructions." Paste this:

"You are a senior financial strategist with 20 years of experience at a top-tier investment bank. You think in frameworks, not generalities. You always give structured outputs with clear sections, real numbers, and actionable next steps. Never give vague advice. If information is missing, ask for it before proceeding."

This single step changes everything. Setting a role in the system prompt focuses Claude's behavior and tone for your use case — even a single sentence makes a measurable difference. Claude API Docs

Step 4: Paste the prompt below

Now open a chat inside your project and paste this exactly:

You are acting as my personal CFO and financial strategist. I am a business owner and I need you to build me a comprehensive, Goldman Sachs-level financial plan for my business.

Here is my business information: — Business type: [describe what you do] — Monthly revenue: [your number] — Monthly expenses breakdown: [list your main cost categories and amounts] — Number of employees or contractors: [number and rough cost] — Current profit margin: [% or "unknown"] — Business goals for the next 12 months: [describe them] — Biggest financial pain point right now: [be specific]

Based on this, build me a full financial plan that includes:

1. Financial Health Audit — assess my current state across revenue, margins, burn, and efficiency 2. Profit & Loss Projection — build a 12-month P&L forecast with three scenarios: conservative, base, and aggressive 3. Cash Flow Analysis — identify where cash is tight, where it leaks, and how to protect runway 4. Cost Optimization Map — identify the top 3 areas I should cut or restructure immediately 5. Revenue Growth Strategy — give me 3 specific, executable strategies to grow revenue in the next 90 days 6. Key Metrics Dashboard — tell me the 5 numbers I should track weekly to know if the business is healthy 7. 12-Month Milestones — break my goals into quarterly checkpoints with clear targets

Be specific. Use real numbers from what I've given you. Ask me for any missing information before you start. Deliver this like a board-level financial briefing.

That's the prompt.

Fill in your numbers, hit send, and watch what happens.

Claude 4.x takes your instructions literally and does exactly what you ask for — which means a well-structured prompt like this gets you the full output, not a watered-down summary. The more specific your inputs, the sharper the output.

Most people ChatGPT their way through business decisions with prompts like "help me make more money." This isn't that.

Reply and let me know if this works for you and what prompt I should build for you next!

Stay sharp.
